With Earth Day on April 22, it’s important to stay environmentally conscious and try to take care of the greenery on campus and around Edmonton. How can you stay green during Earth Day? Here are four ways to embrace your inner Earth Ranger and stay clean!
Pick up garbage! This one seems pretty self-explanatory, but garbage and littering make everything look trashy. It helps to pick up garbage anywhere it shouldn’t be, yours or otherwise, and throw it into a trash bin. Remember, of course, to separate garbage from recyclables to maximize the impact of your efforts.
Put that phone down! One of the greatest ways to reconnect with Earth on Earth Day is to step back from the constant screen use that comes with mobile phones and computers. Take a walk, watch some birds, and spend time with others without any screen use. Plus, fresh air is great for the head!
Walk, don’t drive! Cars are one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. If it’s possible, use an alternative mode of transportation. Walking, busing and biking are all eco-friendly ways to get around. If driving is a must, look into public transit to minimize the amount of emissions!
Enjoy a backyard fire! If possible, start a small fire in your yard. Fires are a natural way to cook, heat, and enjoy company. Sit around a fire in the evening with some wieners and s’mores, spend time with other people and tell fireside stories and warm yourself by the flickering flames. Electricity is sweet, but not nearly as hot as fire.
Earth Day is always worth celebrating, no matter where you are. It’s our responsibility as NAIT students to keep our campus clean and beautiful, even if it means taking extra steps to clean up after others and ourselves.
