3 things I’ve learned as a first-time “plant mom”

By on April 8, 2026

Now that it is the end of March and spring is just around the corner, people (like me) are itching to see more green outside. Why not bring some of that green inside and have it year-round? My indoor plants are one of the best ideas I have had in a long time, and I would recommend you get some too.

Seasonal Depression

For many people, the lack of sunlight in winter hits hard. For me, not seeing leaves on the trees and green grass made my seasonal depression even worse. When I got my first plant at the beginning of February, it started making me feel happier. Seeing plants helps boost your mood and improve air quality. Having something I need to take care of makes me feel needed and important, and plants do a great job of that.

Research

The first thing you need to do before buying your plant is research. Not every kind of plant is made for every kind of lifestyle. I needed to buy plants that don’t need watering every day. They are what fits best with my busy college life. It is hard to remember to water plants when you have three assignments due that week, especially with finals coming up in a few weeks. There are many websites out there that will help you find the right plant for your life. Bloomscape has a great article on the best indoor plants for beginners. Before taking your plant home, knowing how much water it needs, what kind of soil it likes, and how much sun it needs is the first step to giving it a long life.

Responsibility and Patience

Before I got my first plant, a golden pothos, I had the opposite of a green thumb. I killed every plant I touched.  And I would get disappointed that they weren’t growing as fast as I wanted them to. Taking the time to properly care for my plants is how I keep my thumb green. Having plants takes time, energy and patience. I didn’t wake up one day to a tree; it takes time. A lot of things go into making your plants grow. The right amount of water is really important. Some plants need more water, and some need less. Pay attention to and remember to take care of your plants, and they will be happy and healthy.

Plants aren’t for everyone and are a learning process, but knowing the benefits and how to properly take care of plants makes it easier for anybody. Taking the first step to becoming a plant mom is the decision I have made this year.
