Students at NAIT are encouraged to take steps toward inclusion this October as the Centre for Community and Belonging celebrates Disability Awareness Month with interactive events across campus. Open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room E134, the centre is transforming awareness into action through games, workshops and spaces that highlight experiences of people with disabilities.
“This month is about promoting inclusivity by encouraging communities to adopt inclusive practices,” said Natasha Pinterics, community and belonging specialist at NAIT. “We want to invite people to listen and learn from the experiences of those with disabilities.”
Visitors can explore a timeline of disability rights in Canada, browse a gallery of influential Canadians with disabilities, or try activities like button-making and the “Inclusive Language Jar.” The centre’s also hosting meet-and-greets for students with disabilities, a staff workshop on invisible disabilities and a shared speaker series with Career and Learning Services.
“So many people experience disability at some stage in their lives,” Pinterics said. “Creating community, accessing resources and learning together benefits everyone.”
The Centre for Community and Belonging plans to continue its advocacy beyond October, using Disability Awareness Month as a springboard for education and inclusion initiatives at NAIT.
