Joal Kamps named Alberta’s new Artist in Residence

By Admin User on March 4, 2021

Calgary-based, award-winning singer and songwriter Joal Kamps is Alberta’s next Artist in Residence.

Before the announcement, Kamps spent his time as a co-member of folk/roots duo Flint & Feather. He also did solo performances; just him and his guitar.

Now for the next year, Kamps will take on the role of arts ambassador. As an ambassador, he will promote the value of arts and other artists across the province.

My work is narrative at heart – drawing upon Alberta’s history, folklore, and experiences with many diverse populations who call Alberta home. I’m equally passionate about the arts and how they act as a conduit for communication and community building. As an artist who received support from key mentors in my life, I’m thrilled to give back to the province that has given so much to me.

More than 50 artists applied for this year’s Artist in Residence position. The opportunity is open to all artists who live in Alberta. Once interested, candidates are asked to submit a project proposal as part of their application progress.

The Artist in Residence plays a vital role for the arts in our province. Art is work. This month during Alberta Culture Days, I saw first-hand how art enriches our lives, promotes creativity and innovation, and contributes to the economy. Joal will encourage conversations in communities across Alberta to raise the value of artists and the arts in society.

Kamps, selected from a shortlist of seven, will receive a grant of up to $50,000, which includes his compensation and project expenses. He will begin his Artist in Residence term starting October 2020 and will run through till September 2021.

This announcement falls at the end of Alberta’s annual Month of the Artist. An event that focuses on the cultural and economic contributions artists make to this province.

Any communities wanting a visit from this year’s arts ambassador can submit a request through the Artist in Residence website. All events must follow all public health protocols.
