What started as a local donation centre, helping over 400 Ukrainian families and 20,000 newcomers, has turned into a new, refugee-run kitchen on 12153 Fort Rd. DON’YA is quickly becoming a hub for Ukrainian food and a source of employment for new arrivals.
“We’re happy here because I don’t worry if we’ll wake up tomorrow, and that’s the most important part,” said Svetlana Sukhovych, DON’YA Supervisor.
DON’YA is run by 10 refugees, Sukhovych says that this kitchen represents more than just a safe space-it’s a place where culture, community and freedom are celebrated everyday.
“It’s a place where we’re together, we can be free speaking our language, we feel safe and it feels like home.”
DON’YA’s homemade dishes can be purchased in stores and markets like Italian Centre, L’OCA and CO-OP.
