What it’s like being a Penguins fan in Edmonton

By Dylan Weinert on October 2, 2025

Do you know what it’s like to be a Penguins fan in Oil Country? If not, I do, as I’ve been a Penguins fan since the golden goal in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Let me tell you, it’s not easy.

Crosby versus McDavid debate

The argument has been about who is better, Crosby or McDavid. It comes up every time McDavid has some kind of success. But you can always remind them that Crosby has won two Cups in the time McDavid has been in the league. You always have to be careful what you say in a room of hockey fans in Edmonton, and learn to keep your beak shut because you will always be outnumbered.

Penguins’ Success in the 2000s

A great fallback in an argument about success is that the Oilers haven’t won a Cup since 1990, while the Penguins have won five since then—three with Crosby as captain in 2009, 2016, and 2017. You can always remind them that making the Cup Final means nothing without the Cup to show for it.

Black and Gold in a Sea of Orange

It shows how much pride you have if you are willing to wear Black and Gold and waddle into Oil Country. Even if they lose, point up at the banners and remind them they were just kids when a white banner went up. You have to be able to take some hate when it comes to drunk fans.

Marquee Matchup

You can hop on the wave and waddle into Rogers Place and watch the Penguins play the Oilers on Jan. 22.
