Have you ever heard of the “student diet?” Well, if you didn’t know. A student diet is when a student can’t afford to purchase meals and tries to survive throughout the day without eating.
Unfortunately, the price of food is increasing. Students find themselves either ordering takeout or starving with nothing but energy drinks, water and chewing gum in their systems.
According to Go Study Canada, college and university students spend an average of $200-600 per month on grocery’s. Students are spending $10-15 a meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When they can reduce food expenses per month by cooking at home.
We need a solution. A food market that serves delicious pre-made meals, meats, and sweets, all for a reasonable price.
On Oct. 24th, 2023, the Artisanal Food Market was opened to offer a whole new look into groceries with freshness, quality and value.
The Market has an array of delicious and handcrafted meats and pastries prepared by NAIT’s Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts students.
Sadie Morrison, a first-year student in NAIT’s Dental Assisting program, says the Artisanal Food Market is a lifesaver for students.
“For the last year, I’ve done all my grocery shopping at the Artisanal Food Market, and it has saved me a ton of money.”
“Fast food restaurants and grocery stores have lost their magic; the quantity no longer matches the quality.” Morrison said.
Shopping locally is an affective way to save money as products are harvested from local farms. Additionally, markets are invested in providing consumers with great deals and high quality products without the use of harsh chemicals.
When entering the market. Coolers have displays of various meat products and cuts, along with soups and pastries. Nearby, shelves are packed with more baked goodies and tasty preserves.
Make sure to keep an eye out for new products in store from current and former students who have gone on to start their own businesses.
The Artisanal Food Market is located on NAIT’s Main Campus in the Central building (O120) and is open during the school year.
The next time you’re on campus, stop by the Artisanal Food Market and see what looks good.
