NAIT’s hidden hip hop gem to get you grooving
By Gordon Haggerty on December 11, 2024
The NAIT Hip Hop Club is focused on bringing people together with their love of dance and passion to show it off.
They hold many dance showcases on NAIT campus and elsewhere as well as offering beginner, intermediate and advanced dance classes to anyone who wants to learn. Although they are well recognized by NAITSA, few students know about their awesome club which needs to be celebrated more often across campus for their campus participation, free spirit and sweet dance moves.
The HDC as they are known perform in many campus events such as the recent Heritage Day performance they had on the 19th of November this year. They danced to:
-Dynamite by BTS
-on the street (with J. Cole) by J-hope
-Touch by KATSEYE YEONJUN
-Chk Chk Boom by stray kids
-Debut by KATSEYE YEONJUN
Recently the HDC collaborated with the Grant MacEwan and the University of Alberta dance teams to host a Halloween Powerpuff Girls freestyle dance class that “aims to level up your dancing and crime-fighting (or crime-committing👀) skills!” They had two classes with one class costing three dollars and both costing only five dollars.
Aside from the events they host, they also make sure that they participate with the greater NAIT community, this is reflected by their awards which were received at NAITSA award nights. They received the 2023/2024 GI’VER BRONZE DISTINCTION (600-1,500 points) award for giving back to the broader community and showing character and leadership as well as receiving the 2023/2024 Influencer award and hyperactivity award for the most memorable marketing and most campus events hosted.
The HDC also hosts bi-weekly freestyle and themed dance classes covering breakdancing, K pop, freestyle, hip hop and urban choreo. Most recently they had Cayden Lieske teaching on December 5 in Room S112. he Is a break-dancer and a NAIT engineering design tech student, you can find him on Instagram with his handle “itsa_drip.”
