Music offers stress relief for students

By Jeremy Russo on April 9, 2025

Being a student isn’t easy

Using music to its advantage may be the problem solver for many students whose semesters are soon finishing.

Volunteering your time and investing the potential you see in yourself, all while juggling life’s other balls in your hands. Could you imagine the stress?

Many students may have already been told this secret before. Many of them can’t live without it. Music has been scientifically studied, with many researchers stating that the benefits of listening can raise dopamine levels and lower cortisol.

Ever get goosebumps from a song so perfect?

“Do you know that your soul is composed of harmony?”

– Leonardo da Vinci

Students can use music in many ways to their advantage:

Lo-fi music:

Students with many tasks in mind can fly through study sessions and homework dates through the genre of lo-fi music. Lo-fi music is typically a melodic, calming track ranging between 60 to 90 beats per minute – copying a resting heartbeat.

Study playlist:

A proper study playlist can help students succeed, maintaining their focus while also providing just enough background stimulation.

A couple of tips for perfecting your playlist are:

  • Know your tempo & vibe – faster tempos can provide unwanted distractions. Keeping the same vibe in your playlists keeps the mood steady.
  • Run away from lyrics – If you need to read or write, song lyrics can be the most interfering. Having a playlist with movie soundtracks, or instrumental work is guaranteed to put you in the zone.
  • Don’t be scared to experiment – With different genres of music, comes different benefits. While lo-fi beats are great for relaxing, nature sounds help with deep focus and classical enhances memory and concentration.

Anytime, anywhere:

With accessibility to your own personal music library now just within the reach of a pocket, you’re able to virtually listen at any time of choice. Between studying, exercising or unwinding, you can chase the dopamine at any point.

Say goodbye to the stress.

Just like students are around the world, so is music. Music stands alone as a blessing – to benefit from it with no ask in return is a gift. When life gets hard, turn to music for some inspiration. Take advantage of something so accessible and allow yourself to grow because of it.

The next time your headphones are on, take a moment to stop and think…

What song do you play next?
