Making the holidays meaningful far from family

By on December 10, 2025

For many people, the holidays mean going home—being in familiar rooms, sharing meals, and keeping long-time traditions. But for many NAIT students, especially those from other provinces or countries, travelling home in December isn’t realistic. Flights are costly, winter weather can cause delays, and the break is often too short to justify a long trip. Because of this, many students spend the season in Edmonton and experience the holidays in a different way.

Being far from home during a time built around closeness can feel bittersweet. Still, students often find their own ways to connect with the season. Some recreate traditions they grew up with, like cooking familiar dishes or playing music they would hear at home. A simple family recipe can make a small apartment feel a little more like home.

Other students build new traditions with the people around them. Roommates gather for low-key dinners, classmates exchange small gifts before the break, and friend groups explore Edmonton’s winter events together. Activities such as visiting Candy Cane Lane or walking through the Legislature grounds become meaningful because they are shared at a time when connection matters.

Students also stay close to family through video calls, messages and photos. These small moments help them feel included in celebrations happening far away. The holidays may look different, but the feeling of belonging remains.

In the end, the season becomes a mix of old and new. For students who cannot travel, the holidays offer a chance to focus on what matters most: comforting routines, familiar flavours, and the people who support them, even in a temporary home. Edmonton becomes part of their story, not replacing home but adding another place where warmth and meaning can be found.

Being away from family is never easy, especially during the holidays. But NAIT students show that the season can still hold connection and comfort, even from far away.
