The excitement from her classes.
When we finish the semester, reflecting on how we thought post-secondary would be is fun. For many students that reflection might include big lecture halls and PowerPoint presentations.
NAIT’s post-secondary programs are different from this norm. The heart of this excitement often comes from the instructor’s care for teaching the material.
At NAIT all instructors are passionate. Yet the Radio and Television instructors provide a creative edge to their work. When it comes to passion and creativity a teacher comes to mind when it comes to the care and love they have for their work.
So, who is this incredible teacher?
Lamya Asiff is a teacher who has assisted in every one of her student’s educational growth. Aiding all students creatively and personally. Helping them not just with their journalism skills but also their communication skills. She takes her time with the students so they can put more passion into their assignments.
She has made such an impact that she was nominated for a 2019 Instructional Excellence Award. Lamya’s nomination is much deserved. Her passion shines through with her ability to assist all students and attempt to relate to them in any way.
Her love for vocal performance!
Lamya focuses on vocal presentation in some of her classes. Throughout her Professional Communications in Media course, her students improved their vocal and presentation skills.
Many students groan at the thought of presenting. Lamya makes presentations enjoyable. Allowing students to create presentations on what they enjoy. She gives students as much freedom as she can offer. Giving the students as much creative freedom as possible when making assignments for her class.
The heart of a journalist.
When it comes to writing it seems like it’s always formatted so you must always stick to a rubric.
Lamya switches this formula up to keep her students entertained with news stories. Her class Journalism and Storytelling Fundamentals shows that looking at news stories can be interesting. She conveys to students that it can be easier for aspiring journalists to read other journalists’ stories. Showing students that if they engage with stories they enjoy it makes the process of reading other stories easier.
How Lamya has helped me personally.
Lamya has personally helped me grow creatively. Not many teachers I have had throughout my life cared a lot about the vocal aspect of the student.
Many have memories of the presentations we did as kids. Slowly stumbling and mumbling through a slideshow. Lamya’s class is different, she makes presenting feel like a casual conversation in her classes. I see change when people go through Lamya’s class, (myself included).
Lamya has helped me thrive in my studies. She cares about every student she teaches. She is deserving of any teaching awards that come her way. I hope every student who joins the Radio and Television program gets to meet Lamya. She is among the kindest and most passionate teachers I have ever met.
