Flynn wags his way into the hearts of NAIT for one final year

Flynn the dog is 12 years old, and he’s had a wonderful life. He’s spent it as a specially-tested wellness dog, using his natural charm and calm demeanour to comfort NAIT students since 2013. His parent and trainer, Linda Shaw, is looking forward to a lovely year before he retires next spring.
Linda recognized early that students need a furry friend to aid in their mental health. She created the PAWS for a Break program here at NAIT to destigmatize talking about anxiety and the struggles that come with being a student. The two would go for walks to classrooms and common areas, encouraging students to share a moment with Flynn.
“When interacting with an animal, you can’t help but be mindful and present,” says Linda.
Linda chose Flynn from a selection of Australian Labradoodles. This type of dog comes from a complex lineage of many breeds that are especially nurturing to their humans. As a pup, Flynn was put to the test against the others for socialization and behaviour training. He was chosen for his enthusiasm and social capabilities, and from year one it was clear that he was the right dog for the job.
Nowadays, Flynn lives a charmed life in NAIT’s Counselling Centre. He’s friends with everyone in the office and knows who carries the best cookies. Right now, he’s excited because they’re designing the office like a gingerbread house in time for the holidays. The new smells and decorations spark his curiosity, proving this old dog still has lots of life in him yet.
During his last year as an official NAIT staff member, Flynn is available for drop-in visits during regular office hours at the Counselling Centre in the W building. He and Linda can be found taking walks around campus, so you and your friends are always welcome to say hello.
Keep an eye out in March for details about Flynn’s retirement party. Linda assures that it will be quite the celebration. Every dog has his day, and Flynn’s will be as special as he is!
