Alien Romulus: a mix of new and old

By Robin Prevost on October 7, 2024

Alien Romulus is a great addition to the Alien franchise. It is full of unique concepts and storylines, with many callbacks and nods to previous films. It feels like a love letter to the world of Alien, and It was amazing to get to see it on a big screen—spoiler warning for both Alien Romulus and the Alien series as a whole.

Callbacks

Alien Romulus, while being a new addition, has plenty of nods to the OG films.

  • We get the xenomorph’s glorious return to our screens.
  • Ian Holms -who played Ash, a synth in the first Alien film- also played Rook, a broken synth posthumously through CGI and practical effects, which caused mixed reactions from fans and is Romulus’s most controversial decision.
  • Some plot points fans didn’t enjoy in past films ended up being remade bigger and better in Romulus.
  • For example, the black goo from the prequels makes a comeback with a new twist.
  • We also get to see a mutated xeno-human hybrid like the one in Alien Resurrection, though this one isn’t as nice to its mother.
  • We also get some lines and shots pulled straight from past films.

Unique takes

While it references past films, Alien Romulus works as a standalone and is a new story to enjoy.

  • It gives us a new stage of the xenomorph life cycle and new synths- also called synthetic humans- in Andy and Rook.
  • We get to see planets we’ve never seen before that add to the series’ lore.
  • There are also new ships to explore and storylines to follow.
  • Also, the cast is younger than almost any other characters we’ve met. This gives us plenty of refreshing new dynamics, with them forming a found-family bond.
  • Compared to past films, crews were shown to see each other as simply coworkers.
