5 steps to prepare you for winter driving

By Liz Parent on November 19, 2024

Winter has arrived in Edmonton. Are you ready to face the roads? Read on for 5 steps to keep yourself and others safe on the road this winter season.

Step 1 – Check the weather

Our number one step is to make sure you are checking the weather before you leave the house. Nothing gets you prepared more than knowing what you are preparing for. Checking weather apps or catching the latest news is a great way to know what’s happening in the city. For example, you can find out about the weather online.

Step 2 – Winter tires

All seasons are fine, but winter tires outperform and will keep your car in the best condition for unpredictable snow conditions on the road, especially with abrupt stops, stalls, and accidents. Winter tires adhere to winter roads through better traction in the cold temperatures and help avoid crashes. If you haven’t done so already, dig out or buy new winter tires and get them installed before the weather drops into the negatives.

Step 3 – Snow brush/snow scraper

You know your windows are going to get icy and covered in snow. Before the snow falls too much go out and purchase a snow brush! The ideal brush should have a brush on one end and on the other a scraper to get off the stubborn ice. You can get a scraper from any hardware store, dollar store, or Walmart.

Step 4 – Full tank of gas

An easy way to ensure your safety is to make sure you are keeping a full tank of gas in your car. It prepares you for any unexpected conditions where you get stopped, held up, or stranded in a ditch. Having the gas to run the vehicle will keep you warm and safe.

Step 5 – Emergency kit

In case of emergency, it is important to make sure you have everything you might need. And because of Alberta’s unpredictable weather, it makes sense to have anything you might need. Some of those things include:

  • Jumper cables
  • Blanket
  • Extra winter clothes – gloves, hat, scarves, boots, jacket, etc.
  • Phone charger
  • Flashlight
  • Toolkit
  • First aid kit
  • Snacks
  • Water

This is not a comprehensive list, and it doesn’t hurt to throw anything else into your trunk that you feel could be useful.

Follow these steps to ensure both your safety and others on the road this winter season. Keep prepared and stay safe out there!
