Peers supporting peers at NAIT

NAIT students now have access to a new complimentary counselling service. The Peer Support Centre, which opened its doors on January 30. It’s a confidential service run by students, for students, and is designed to give support and resources to those who may be struggling.

“There’s no judgement, we don’t take your ID. It’s a confidential service,” said Meagan Brodeur, the Service Hub Manager at NAIT Students’ Association.

The aim is to provide students with an environment where they feel safe talking about whatever is affecting them.

Peer Support workers cutting the ribbon officially opening the centre.

“I know that counselling has had huge increases in use every single year,” said Brodeur. “Counselling is super busy and there is more of a need for it. So this is just another way we can help students get in to see somebody.”

All peer supporters go through an interview and training process to ensure quality care. Students can access the service on a walk-in basis on the main campus.

One-on-one sessions are available from January 7- April 26 during weekdays.

  • Monday: 9-11 a.m.
  • Tuesday: 2-4 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 9-11 a.m. & 3-5 p.m.
  • Thursday 1-3 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

The Peer Support program is funded by the NAIT Students’ Association, with support from a provincial grant.
