A new book by Lorna Schultz Nicholson titled Connor McDavid: A Threat With a Puck is the first book in her new series Amazing Hockey Stories.
The book traces the life of the young phenom from a young boy growing up in Ontario, all the way to leading the Oilers to their first playoff appearance in over ten years.
Schultz Nicholson is the wife of Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) Vice Chairman Bob Nicholson. Her connection to the Oilers is what led her to meet with McDavid and his parents to get stories of the player’s life growing up.
“His parents were really huge in helping me with the book and sending me early photos and just livening up those early sections that maybe Connor doesn’t have the same memory for but a mother would have that memory,” said Schultz Nicholson.
One of the things that stood out to Schultz Nicholson when she was talking with McDavid was that he has always been a student of the game.
“When he was four years old he used to sit in the locker room of his bothers hockey team and just listen intently.”
The book is geared towards young readers by including such things as pictures and even comics spreads.
“It’s difficult to get boys to read, so if you can get a subject matter, get some words on a page and have them read a book and make them feel successful, that’s fabulous, because you know reading a book like this may push them to read another book, and that’s what you’re looking for that’s the ultimate goal is to get kids reading,” said Schultz Nicholson.
The book launched this past Sunday at Audrey’s Books in downtown Edmonton, where Schultz Nicholson answered questions and held a book signing.
