NAIT Ooks curling season begins

By Quinn Olson on November 23, 2025

The NAIT Ooks curling team had a strong start to its season at the Curling Fall Regional in Airdrie on Nov. 21-23.

The all-returning men’s team went 5-0, making a clean sweep to take first place.

“They’re doing all the right things, so I just want them to keep practicing, keep it light, keep doing what they’re doing,” said head coach Karynn Flory-Simmons.

The mixed team went 3-1, grabbing second place.

“They really enjoy their time out there, they have a lot of fun. So we’re going to hone in on more technical skills and progress through to the winter term,” said Flory-Simmons.

The women’s team, made up of all new members, had many close games but didn’t manage to pull out any wins, going 0-6 to end the weekend.

“They’re right there. They just need to execute a few more shots, which comes down to the technical work and consistency,” said Flory-Simmons. “Once they understand each other and all their roles out on the ice, they’ll gel, and it’ll all come together.”

Flory-Simmons says she’s excited for what she believes will be a promising season.

“We have a lot of fun out there. I would say that’s our biggest strength, we don’t beat ourselves up. Not everyone is going to play 100 per cent all of the time. But we’re going to be able to lift each other up, and keep going for the next one.”

The curling team has two more tournaments before the end of the season. They will be hosting one Jan. 16 to 18 and then heading to Lac La Biche for the ACAC Curling Championship from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.
