Edmonton’s first shipping container home taking shape

The first shipping container home in Edmonton is currently under construction and getting ready to hit the open market soon. Copperblock Capital and Sweet Suite Home Builds are teaming up to build the home on 106 St. in Queen Alexandra.
Adam Morris, President of Copperblock Capital says the idea of building a home out of shipping containers challenged his company, “We’ve been trying to build sustainable, environmentally and socially aware. Looking at how we can accomplish those things as well as how we can reduce our time under construction. We started looking at the science behind it and some of the features and functions and determined that it was suitable.”
A shipping container home differs from a regular home in many ways. It does cost more to build than a regular home, as the builder has to purchase the shipping containers beforehand. Morris says the containers do offer more benefits than an average house. “It’s more energy efficient than the typical house. It’s mould, fire and major catastrophe resistant. It won’t fall over in a hurricane and it won’t fall over in an earthquake.”
Since shipping container homes are fairly new to the Edmonton area, Morris says it’ll be interesting to see who the buyer is. He believes it’ll be someone who is into technology and reducing their carbon footprint. “Millennial generations is somebody whose looks at that and goes ‘You know what this is a great product to use’,” explains Morris.
The home is under construction and the completion date is not yet known. The home is going to be listed at $799,000 and will be available on Edmonton’s open market.
