Edmonton woman starts scrunchie business in memory of her grandma

Christina Verschuur is putting her grieving heart to use. After she lost her grandma to a long nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s in February of 2019, she decided she wanted to make a difference.

Her grandma loved to sew. And when Christina was a little girl, her grandmother taught her how to use a sewing machine.

When her grandma got sick, she was unable to do certain things that she used to – one of these things was sewing. When Christina unpacked her sewing machine, she found a bin of fabrics that belonged to her grandmother and started using it to make scrunchies for her new business, Tied By The Scrunch.

“I made this one out of my favourite fabric. I wear it, and then I
take her with me wherever I go,” says Christina.

For every scrunchie she makes out of her grandma’s fabric, she donates the money to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta (ASOA) in memory of her grandma.

Her mother, Sandra Verschuur, is touched by her gesture. “I’m proud of her and I think her grandmother would have been too. She would have been really happy to have her using her fabric and sewing something. She would’ve been really proud of her.”

The Alzheimer Society of Alberta is grateful for her donation as well.

“Most of our funding is actually from individual donors. So our largest is when people make a donation in memory of somebody. Without them we wouldn’t actually exist, ” says Arlene Huhn, the Regional Lead of the AOSA.

With the holiday season coming closer, Christina hopes she can make a large donation to the ASOA, in memory of her grandma.
