Edmonton filmmakers new series Crip Trip aims to celebrate friendship and spark change

By Logan Thompson on April 22, 2025

Crip Trip is a bold new docuseries from the minds of Edmonton filmmaker Fredrick Kroetsch and his best-friend, and fellow filmmaker, Daniel Ennett. The six-part series premiering on April 25, 2025, follows the friends on a journey from Edmonton, Alberta, to New York City in a decked-out 1983 RV.

Crip Trip is a raw, hilarious, and heartfelt exploration of disability, caregiving, and the complexities of friendship. Ennett, a quadruple amputee, is on a mission to secure full-time employment and avoid being institutionalized due to inadequate home care options.

“I’m here to show people the culture, and proselytize how awesome we are and how under-resourced we are, and give disabled people a platform where they can rage against the machine,” said Ennett.

Along for the ride is Kroetsch, who finds himself suddenly thrust into the role of Daniel’s full-time caregiver, a job he openly admits he was not prepared for.

The series blends laugh-out-loud moments with sobering truths. Described by the creators as a “punk-rock, gonzo, road trip, buddy comedy,” Crip Trip doesn’t shy away from the hard realities of caregiving.

As they journey through cities and towns, the duo encounters breakdowns (mechanical and emotional), ghost hunts, amateur stand-up gigs, and even couples therapy. But despite the bumps in the road, Crip Trip remains focused on its core message: members of the disability community deserve better— better access, better care, and, most importantly, better employment opportunities.

“Part of my plan in this is to get Danny more work in television so that we can just keep this whole idea of going into long-term care as far away as we can,” said Kroetsch.

Ennett adds, “But of course we’re pragmatic about it, no amount of work will save disabled people from potentially being institutionalized. All it takes is a stiff breeze sometimes to destabilize you.”

“But we can try, right? We can give it the old college effort,” finishes Kroetsch.

Produced with support from AMI and set to air on TVO, Crip Trip challenges perceptions and sheds light on the often invisible struggles facing disabled Canadians. But more than that, it’s a celebration of resilience, friendship, and the wild, messy ride of life on the road.

Whether you’re tuning in for the laughs, the lessons, or the unexpected detours, Crip Trip promises a journey you won’t forget.

Catch the premiere on April 25 at 9 p.m. Eastern on AMI-tv or stream it anytime on AMI+.
