City of Edmonton celebrates Métis Week with official proclamation

By Madi Gerrior on November 15, 2025

The City of Edmonton declared Nov. 15 to 22 as Métis Week during a proclamation ceremony at City Hall, where Mayor Andrew Knack joined leaders from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government to recognize the contributions and cultural legacy of Métis people.

“Métis Week reminds us that the spirit of the Métis Nation continues to grow through language, art and leadership that enrich our city every day,” said Mayor Andrew Knack.

The Métis flag has been on permanent display outside City Hall since March 2017. The city has celebrated Métis Week annually since 1997.

“We’re really proud of the work that our citizens, our past leaders, the leaders that we have today have done for the nation within Alberta that we work hard every day for our citizens,” said Andrea Sandmaier, president of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “And this week is a time to reflect on that and to share our culture and our histories.”

This year’s celebration follows the 2024 signing of the renewed Memorandum of Shared Recognition and Cooperation between the City of Edmonton and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

The week ended on Nov. 22 with the Delia Gray Gala, named for the first provincial Elder for the Métis Nation of Alberta. The gala honoured both Delia Gray and Métis scholars.
