Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil at the Alberta Legislature on February 6, in a show of solidarity. They came to mourn the shooting deaths of six men in a Quebec City mosque, and to show their love and support for the Muslim community.
The vigil featured a number of different speakers including Mayor Don Iveson, Premier Rachel Notley and leaders from the Muslim community. Faesal Khan Suri, president of Alberta Muslim Affairs Council, was one of the speakers to share a message with the audience.
“Every Muslim globally believes in tranquility of Islam, where peace, love and harmony is a common message.”
Premier Rachel Notley also addressed the crowd. “The answer to the problem of fear and hatred is not discrimination. Discrimination does not make our communities safer. The solution to the problem of fear and hatred quite frankly is all of you.”
Similar vigils were held across the country.
