Alberta’s best college students gearing up for badminton provincials

By Steven Leong on February 6, 2024

ACAC badminton players took to the courts on the weekend in the last tournament of the season before provincials.

“These tournaments before provincials are really about scoping out the other players. You know, how they play, trying to get an idea of what I need to improve to try to match up better,” said Anthony Olson, The King’s University badminton player.

Seeding for provincials is dependent on how players do in this tournament, as it could be the difference between playing an early morning game or earning a first-round bye.

“I definitely want to improve my standings in the competition and get as many points as possible for NAIT. Essentially, all of the points we get today add up to what schools we’re going to be playing,” said Sam Tran, NAIT Ooks badminton player.

The disciplines being played are:

  • Men’s Singles
  • Women’s Singles
  • Men’s Doubles
  • Women’s Doubles
  • Mixed Doubles

NAIT hosts the 2024 ACAC badminton provincials on Feb. 17 and 18. The schools participating this year are NAIT, SAIT, The King’s University and Concordia.

Players and their respective schools must finish in the top two in their discipline in order to qualify for nationals from Feb. 28 to March 2 at Seneca College in Toronto, Ontario.
