A new Arctic Wolf Habitat opens at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

Edmonton Valley Zoo’s animal Care Supervisor, Wayne Woods said, “It is the largest wolf exhibit in Alberta.”
The Edmonton Valley Zoo has officially opened its new Arctic wolf enclosure, providing a larger, more natural space for its three wolves. This 5,000-square-meter habitat is designed to resemble the Arctic tundra, offering the wolves an environment where they can roam, climb, and engage in natural behaviours.
Tundra’s New Sanctuary
Tundra, the majestic Arctic wolf at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, has been a beloved resident for 13 years. After the loss of his long-term mate, the Valley Zoo Development Society, with support from the Malliner Charitable Foundation, launched a project to create a new home for Tundra and his two new packmates, Aspen and Anuri, who arrived in 2024. The completed habitat now offers the trio a peaceful and enriching sanctuary to call home.
A More Natural Environment
The new enclosure includes:
- A climate-controlled indoor area for year-round comfort
- Trees, grasses, and shrubs
- Large boulders and fallen logs
- A pond with a waterfall for enrichment
- An underground den for natural digging
The Zoo’s Lead Animal Care Specialist, Lisa Goode said, “This new habitat allows the wolves to express their natural behaviors while also giving visitors a better opportunity to observe them up close.”
A Step Forward for Conservation
This development is part of the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and education. The project was funded by private donors and the Valley Zoo Development Society, aiming to enhance the wolves’ quality of life and public awareness of Arctic wildlife.
The Director of the Valley Zoo Development Society, Jordan Klein said, “This project prioritizes the animals’ well-being, and we’re excited to share it with the community.”
Visit the Wolves
The Arctic wolf habitat is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently, guests can see Aspen and Anuri exploring the outdoor area, while Tundra continues to adjust behind the scenes.
